Hawaii International Film Festival - Seminar with filmmaker Wayne Wang
Location: Regal Cinemas at Dole Cannery, 650 Iwilei Rd., Honolulu, Hawaii 96817
"Books to Film: Crossing Boundaries, Creating Worlds."
Join visionary, Wayne Wang, and a panel of local scholars and film enthusiasts as they explore the challenges inherent in creating films from the written word. With over 15 feature films to his credit, Wayne Wang has skillfully maneuvered his way across cultural perspectives, interpreting a variety of books and stories into films, among them: THE JOY LUCK CLUB (1993), BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE (2005), ANYWHERE BUT HERE (1999), EAT A BOWL OF TEA (1989), and his current films at this year’s HIFF festival: A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS (2007) and PRINCESS OF NEBRASKA (2007). His films are imaginative, engaging and daring. Wang’s work clearly shows that terms like “commercially viable” and “cultural voice” are not mutually exclusive concepts.
Panelists will look at balancing literary inspiration with the creative process, the pros and cons of collaborating with the literary writer, the essentials of good storytelling, and cross cultural representations. Mr. Wang will be joined by: Vilsoni Hereniko, an award-winning playwright, filmmaker, author and professor. Hereniko teaches courses in Pacific literature, film, and theater at the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa. His feature, THE LAND HAS EYES, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (2004); Ruth Y. Hsu, who teaches in the English department at UH Manoa, specializes in Asian American and contemporary American ethnic literary and cultural studies, as well as cultural texts dealing with post colonialism, human migration, and globalization. Ms. Hsu is an advocate of independent media, and produces and hosts “Tuff Talk” on Olelo Community TV. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Konrad Ng, who teaches in the Academy for Creative Media at UH Manoa. His current research and teaching interests include: the art, history, politics and philosophy of cinema, including Asian and Asian American media cultures.
