Film Screening of "The Age of Innocence"
Location: Portland Public Library, Rines Auditorium, Portland, ME 04101
Enjoy a screening of Columbia Pictures 1993 film version of Edith Wharton's classic "The Age of Innocence." Directed by Martin Scorsese, screenplay written by Jay Cocks, and starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Winona Ryder. Immediately following the film, UMaine Professor Jeff Evans will lead a critical discussion of the Scorsese film. Snow date March 11th, 5:30 - 8 PM.

Need help envisioning the spectacular, Gilded Age homes described in “The Age of Innocence”? Then join us for the first of two performances at Victoria Mansion where well-preserved, lavish, and sophisticated original interiors serve as the backdrop for scenes from the novel. Students from the School of Music at the University of Southern Maine kick-off the evening with a musical presentation from the opera Faust followed by the Livermore Falls High School Theater group who perform select scenes from “The Age of Innocence.” Admission to this event is free, however, reservations are required as attendance is limited. Please e-mail information@victoriamansion.org and specify the 5 - 7 PM performance.

Panel Discussion: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching "The Age of Innocence"

Are you an educator looking for resources to teach "The Age of Innocence" or perhaps looking for a new approach to teaching about the Gilded Age? In this presentation University of Southern Maine Professors Kent Ryden, Ardis Cameron, Donna Cassidy, and Diane Wood provide an interdisciplinary look at Wharton's novel. Topics will include the cultural landscape and social spaces, gender and sexuality, art and architecture, and the construction of identity. Two contact hours will be awarded. for a ball. Resplendent in an 1890s ball gown, follow this Victorian Lady to the ball
where her dashing partner will Waltz, Polka, Two Step and Mazurka his way into her heart!
After performance artist Kandie Carle dresses from the inside out, she will "go to the ball" along with dance partner Marc Casslar of the Vintage Dance Society, where they will showcase the popular dances of the Gilded Age. Live music for the dance demonstration is provided by Spare Parts, Bill Matthiesen and Liz Stell.

Singley, Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University-Camden, as she shares what this book can teach us about accepting life and embracing change. In this lecture, Dr. Singley will analyze characters, point out major themes, as well as discuss Edith Wharton, her life, and some parallels between “The Age of Innocence” and her life. Lecture by Pauline Metcalf: "Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman: The Unspoken Language of Rooms"

Pauline Metcalf is an architectural historian and an interior designer. She is a contributing author and editor of Ogden Codman and the Decoration of Houses (David R. Godine, 1988). She has lectured extensively on late 19th- and early 20th-century interiors and on the influence of women on interior design and collecting. She has also been instrumental in the restoration of The Mount, Edith Wharton's home in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Lecture and Demonstration: The Meaning and Arrangement of Flowers

In "The Age of Innocence" why did Newland Archer send lilies of the valleys to his fiancée May Welland but yellow roses to her cousin Ellen Olenska? What meanings were associated with the separate flowers? And what meanings are associated with other flowers such as gardenias, red roses, daisies, and orchids? How did Ellen arrange the flowers that she received? In this slide lecture, Victoria Mansion's Deputy Director Julia Kirby shares the secrets implied by a suitor's choice of flowers. Following the lecture, Dan Kennedy, Owner, Harmon's & Barton's / Sawyer & Company Flowers, demonstrates the art of floral arranging. Celebrate "The Age of Innocence" by attending the opening of this special exhibit and interpretive tour! Skyline Farm Carriage Museum will showcase carriages and sleighs similar to those used in New York during the 1870s, the backdrop for Edith Wharton's book. Knowledgeable docents will explain why the type of carriage being driven often signified the owner's economic status and social standing during the Gilded Age. Museum admission is free; donations are gratefully accepted. All proceeds benefit Skyline Farm, a nonprofit organization which owns an historic farmstead, including a carriage and sleigh museum.
