The End of Reading, the Future of Scholarly Publishing

Dr. William Sisler, Director of the Harvard University Press, will speak on "The End of Reading, the Future of Scholarly Publishing" at the keynote event at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Dr. Sisler will address themes raised in the National Endowment for the Art’s report “Reading at Risk” and in “Fahrenheit 451.” The event is free and open to the public with a reception; and it is sponsored by the Friends of Brookens Library, the Office of the Provost, UIS, and the University of Illinois Press, in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the U of I Press.

Is internet censorship modern day book-burning? Join us in an open forum just for teens to discuss internet censorship and the freedom of speech challenges of a digital generation. The program will use the history of banned sites and historic legal cases outlining internet regulations as discussion starters, but teens are invited to share their experiences and thoughts as well.

Find out how the core themes of the classic science fiction novel, Fahrenheit 451 translate to today's society. This event will feature a panel discussion, moderated by experts in the fields of media, psychology, law and literature, will answer some "burning" questions from the book. Are the topics raised in the book such as freedom of expression and censorship still relevant today? Find out what the experts have to say and weigh in on the issue. Refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Loren Logsdon, an English professor at Eureka College and a lifelong Ray Bradbury scholar, will speak at this programs to be broadcast over the Internet and into Second Life and Teen Second Life. This program will consist of personal stories about Ray Bradbury, especially his two visits to Eureka College, where he met students and gave lectures on his life and works.

Etched into the Indiana limestone on the fifth story frieze of the Illinois State Library in Springfield, are the names of 35 of Illinois' most distinguished authors, including Ray Bradbury. The Big Read and "Fahrenheit 451" are the subjects of discussion. The discussion is held in conjunction with a visit by library workers from Africa.

"Fahrenheit 451" was discussed widely discussed in the community from mid-October through mid-November. Dr. Bess Capo conducted a book discussion; a discussion was held for ESL participatants with the assistance of the Beardstown Memorial Public Library; the 1966 film was screened; and a discussion was held at the North Green Correctional Center. The book was also discussed at Jacksonville High School.

Welcome to Greentown: Dandelion Wine

Dr. Loren Logsdon, an English professor at Eureka College and a lifelong Ray Bradbury scholar, will speak at this program to be broadcast over the Internet and into Second Life and Teen Second Life. This program is an invitation to visit Greentown, Illinois, the setting for Bradbury's "Dandelion Wine". You will meet some of the interesting people who live there: a seventy-two year old woman who never had a childhood, a human time machine, and a mysterious, shadowy figure called the Lonely One. Dr. Logsdon will tell of his experiences teaching the novel and explain why it is such an important work.

"A Visit to the Future: Fahrenheit 451"

Dr. Loren Logsdon, an English professor at Eureka College and a lifelong Ray Bradbury scholar, will speak at this program to be broadcast over the Internet and into Second Life and Teen Second Life. The third program is a visit to the future, to the unnamed city in Fahrenheit 451, a place that is the exact opposite of Greentown. Bradbury describes a future that is not compatible with human happiness. We and follow Montag, a fireman who destroys books, and his gradual awakening to the need to seek a better way to live. If time permits, we will look at two other books: "The October Country" and "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

Prizes and Awards Ceremony in Mary Jane's Cafe, Lower Level of Brookens Library. Refreshments will be provided by BEVANDE. The library will stay open beyond closing time for the art show, Admission is FREE and this event is open to the public. Library will be open until 7 pm. The student artworks will be on display through the end of the Fall semester.

Dr. Loren Logdson of Eureka College, a friend of Bradbury and expert on his writings, will open the evening with a short address about Bradbury and the importance of his works. Logdson will then interview Bradbury, who will be at his home in Los Angeles. The Illinois Center for the Book will present Bradbury with the Illinois Literary Heritage Award, and the evening will conclude with a free reception in the restaurant on the lower level of the UIS Public Affairs Center.
