A Lesson Before Dying: A Discussion with Ernest Gaines and Local African American Literary Scholars

The Givens Foundation for African American Literature launches The Big Read 2008-2009 in the Twin Cities Metro Area with a conversation between Author Ernest Gaines and local African American scholars John Wright, Alexs Pate and Irma McClaurin. The dialogue will explore Gaines' novel "A Lesson Before Dying," a poignant tale that explores fundamental questions of human dignity and the meaning and value of life in the face of death. The Givens Foundation's Big Read 2008-2009 is presented in collaboration with Hennepin County Library and the African American Read-In. The Oct 14 kick off event and will include dramatic readings from the text as well as an overview of Big Read events scheduled for the upcoming academic year.
