Door County Big Read Kick-Off

Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton will introduce this evening of festivities kicking off Door County's Big Read 2008, celebrating John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." The highlight of the evening will be a talk by Norbert Blei about Steinbeck, his background, career, and the circumstances that led him to write “The Grapes of Wrath.” Scott Wakefield will perform two Woody Guthrie tunes.

The creative team behind the recent hit opera version of “The Grapes of Wrath:” composer Ricky Ian Gordon, librettist Michael Korie, and director Eric Simonson will discuss the process of interpreting and adapting this great novel into the very different medium of opera and for today’s audiences. Gordon will play and sing selections from the opera.
