Organizational Description: The Greater Owensboro Region has deemed itself a “Learning Community.” It has sought the input and commitment of educators, community agency representatives, and industry leaders to ensure a community-wide, strategic focus to improve education conditions in western Kentucky and to promote lifelong learning. As an active member of the Greater Owensboro Learning Community, Owensboro Community and Technical College will serve as fiscal agent for The Big Read in the Greater Owensboro Region. OCTC’s mission is to educate, lead, and serve all citizens who choose to enhance their lives and community through the pursuit of education.

Program Description: The Big Read in the Greater Owensboro Region was developed by a collaborative partnership, including Owensboro Community and Technical College, the Daviess County Public Library, the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, SkillTrain Adult Learning Center, RiverPark Performing Arts Center, the Community Foundation, and the Friends of the Library. A community-wide read of Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club, accompanied by a series of engaging activities with a cultural diversity focus, will serve to promote literary reading in western Kentucky.
