Organizational Description: The Cherokee Regional Library System is a nonprofit organization serving all of Dade and Walker counties, Georgia. Its members believe that strong public libraries are a valuable intellectual, cultural, educational, and recreational resource in the community. The library system special services include the North Georgia Talking Book Center, GED classes offered by Northwestern Technical College, and the Georgia History Room special collections of books, microfilm, and other materials. Its members offer local literacy-based activities to encourage reading for pleasure, community partnership building with Walker County Connections and Dade First Family Connections collaborative, and programming for a diverse community.
Program Description: The Cherokee Regional Library System’s participation in The Big Read project will consist of programs designed to encourage reading throughout the communities in Dade and Walker counties, Georgia. There are 10 scheduled discussions about To Kill a Mockingbird to be held at various locations. Teachers will include units of study on the book and students will be encouraged to participate in the public discussions. The characters from Harper Lee’s novel will speak to the community through these events, celebrating their story, reminding us of how far we have come and how far we still have to go.
