Organizational Description: The New Mexico State University (NMSU) Library’s mission is to develop and provide resources and services to meet the needs of the NMSU community and the people of New Mexico. NMSU is a Hispanic-serving institution and land grant university located in Las Cruces, forty miles from the Mexican border. With its more than 1.7 million item collection, the Library supports NMSU’s efforts to understand the varied and vibrant culture of our region through research guidance and programming. The land grant philosophy of extension, outreach, and public service underlies all university activities.
Program Description: We at the New Mexico State University Library — in partnership with the Las Cruces Public School Libraries, the Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, the Doña Ana Arts Council, and Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico — are excited to present our vision for The Big Read. In order to encourage reading among our diverse community, we will sponsor a festival consisting of free public programs and activities promoting New Mexican author Rudolfo Anaya’s classic novel Bless Me, Ultima (Bendíceme, Última), in English and Spanish. Join us throughout October 2007, for music, storytelling, book discussions, contests, and more.
