This Community Information | This Community Calendar

Organizational Description: The Hawaii Capital Cultural District (HCCD) coalition is a dynamic partnership of arts and cultural organizations, businesses, public agencies, and individuals striving to become a National Heritage Area. HCCD shares a vision of creating a vibrant mauka (mountains) to makai (water) downtown Honolulu characterized by Hawaii’s unique and diverse heritage, cultures, and arts. The organization’s mission is to preserve, nurture, and interpret the rich heritage of Hawaii’s past and present; promote Hawaii as a premier destination for cultural and heritage tourism; and generate economic development and neighborhood vitality in the area through its cultural assets.

Program Description: Hawaii’s The Big Read program is designed to inspire reading of great literary works, such as The Joy Luck Club, while reaching out to citizens of all age groups. HCCD partners will host a kick-off event with Governor Linda Lingle at the Hawaii State Library, followed by special events throughout October 2007. Activities will include celebrity readings, theatrical interpretations, movie screenings, cultural events, PBS Hawaii panel discussion, book clubs, and hand-on workshops for teachers and students across the islands.
