Organizational Description: The Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College promotes reading and writing throughout the year by consistently presenting high-quality literary activities open to all. Established and emerging authors come to South Florida where they read, lecture, participate in discussions, and teach workshops. The Center's literacy-focused initiatives encourage an appreciation for books and enhance the reading skills of both children and adults. The Florida Center for the Book was established in 1984 as the first state affiliate of The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Its mission is to celebrate the literary heritage of Florida, bring readers and writers together, and promote books, reading and libraries. The organization develops and presents literary programs, projects and celebrations to enrich literary experiences of readers throughout Florida.

Program Description: Through panel discussions, read-ins, book discussions, film screenings, and events, The Florida Center for the Literary Arts and the Florida Center for the Book will bring Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms to Miami-Dade and Broward counties from April 7-April 28, 2007. High school students from public, private and parochial schools will be targeted through the read-ins, book discussions, and guided tours of WWI propaganda art collection from Italy, France and Great Britain at the Wolfsonian Foundation - Florida International University. Other highlights include a kick-off event with a theatrical performance of Papa, and conversation with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist John de Groot; a panel discussion entitled Life After War with war veterans, journalists, and authors; and a closing event with a field trip to Key West.
