Mother-Daughter Breakfast

With female empowerment being a central theme of the book, our closing event will be dedicated to the role of women in the Dominican Republic during the period depicted in the book (1930s-1960s) versus today. Held on Mother’s Day in 2014, daughters and their mothers will gather for breakfast at the Mission Main Community Center. Following breakfast, participants will engage in an intergenerational dialogue. Mothers – most of which will be of Latino/ Dominican origin – will share with their daughters their family’s experience leaving their home country, while daughters will reflect upon this choice and its impact on their lives. Mothers and daughters will work together to draw connections between their own cultural history and those of the Mirabal sisters.
