Book Discussion & Workshop: When Characters Come to Stay

Your character: she’s here, on the front porch, with all her luggage, and she’s promising to stay for an indeterminate period of time. Now what will you do? Writers often struggle with ways to try and get a character moving in a story. One of the most effective techniques is to put pressure on your character through her relationship with other characters. In Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping, the driving force for the narrative is the way the relationship between Sylvie, Lucille, and Ruth changes each of them. In a two-hour craft class, we’ll look closely at Robinson’s novel to see how she structures scenes to reveal character, and how you can learn from her. Suitable for all levels of experience. Bring your ideas for a character and your favorite writing tools.

Book Discussion & Workshop: Scene and Unscene

Writing advice usually privileges scene over exposition, but if you’re one of those writers who often feels stuck in scenes, or wishes to go more deeply into your character’s mind, this class is for you. While it’s true that exposition can slow a story down, in Housekeeping, Marilynne Robinson offers beautiful examples of ways that writers can craft narrative summaries using time, narrative distance, even omniscience in such a way as to keep the narrative alive and readers engaged. We’ll do a close reading of a few passages and try out some ideas for effective exposition in your own work. Bring ideas and your favorite writing tools.
