"The Namesake" Homeschool Art of India

This first event of the library’s for the Big Read was a home-school focused discussion group that talked about the country of India, its people, and some of its cultures. The target audience for this program was children ages 7-12. This was held on Thursday afternoon. The attendance was a bit low as we were under blizzard conditions the day of the program, but still had 4 children and 3 adults in attendance. The discussion included three stories from Indian authors about life in Indian, some classic Indian folk tales, and a discussion on the artwork of India. The children in attendance had the chance to pet their imaginations run wild and spend a portion of the program drawing, creating, and coloring artwork using Indian designs. The children who attended had a great deal of fun, and everyone was very much looking forward to the next home-school program at the end of February.

Pre-school Storytime - Weather, Rain, & Monsoon!

Each week the library hosts a themed story time, and the month of February is themed around multi-cultural aspects that include, but are not limited to India. This first week of story time, which is held on both Tuesday and Wednesday of the week, was focused on the topic of rain. The story times are focused on an audience of Pre-Kindergarten. The story time included a brief discussion of rain and what happens when it rains. We followed with five stories that all discussed rain, including two books written by Indian authors on the monsoon season in India and the fun to be had during a monsoon afternoon, and finished with a fun craft about rain and umbrellas. This week’s story time had about 25 kids in attendance, and all enjoyed the wet and muddy mess that rain is!

Over Land & Sea: Spearfish Immigration Stories

A new exhibit called “Over Land & Sea: Spearfish Immigration Stories,” will be unveiled during an opening night reception in The Matthews Art Gallery on Friday, February 7, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The reception will feature many of the Spearfish citizens who participated in this exhibit. Their framed photos and personal immigration experiences will be on the gallery walls. It is free and open to the public. The exhibition will continue through Saturday, February 22 during normal art gallery hours — Tuesday through Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This exhibition is part of The Big Read that is currently going on in Spearfish with the book, “The Namesake.” There are eleven Spearfish citizens who have agreed to participate. They are Scott Gillis, Petra Hansen, Parthasarathi Nag, Micheline Nelson, Jytte Bowers, Jonna Henwood, Florence Tan, Edith Miles, Dago Rodriguez, Ahrar Ahmad, and Abby Domogail. Kaija Swisher, Director of the Writing Center at Black Hills State University and former Black Hills Pioneer reporter, conducted each interview. Each written interview will be posted on the art gallery walls next to their framed photographs. This event will attempt to provide insight into: “What does it mean to be an immigrant in the United States? What does it mean to be an American?” Kaija Swisher drew parallels of the Spearfish immigration stories and “The Namesake.” “The Big Read has allowed many in Spearfish to experience Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake. The novel tells the story of a newly-married couple who moves from India to the United States and highlights their experience of life in a new country, as well as the life of their children, born in the United States.”

"The Namesake" Teen & Young Adult Henna Art

Our teens and young adults were also able to participate in our Big Read programming by having an after-school events focused towards them. This event was based on the idea of Indian body art, particularly that of the popular artwork of henna tattoos and body art. The group had a great discussion on different types of henna, how it is created, and the process on which it is applied to the body. After showing a bit of an instructional video on the actual henna process, the teens had the chance to create their own designs using clear and colored vinyl gloves. We also listened to some Hindi Pop on Pandora while designing and munching on snacks. There were four teens and young adults in attendance, and all had a great time letting their creativity flourish. As an added bonus to the teens, the library had been provided with an actual Bollywood poster that we decided to give away at the event. The teen that walked home with the poster was quite pleased!
