Solve "The Mystery of the Red Mustache" - Community Scavenger Hunt

Join us for our Big Read kick-off event in downtown Spearfish! There is a mystery in Spearfish - one that only you, as the hard-boiled detective, can solve. Pick up your crime sheets in The Matthews art gallery and explore downtown businesses for the clues to solve the mystery. Return your solution to the mystery to be included in a drawing for free tickets to The Matthews Community Theatre production of “The Maltese Falcon Radio Show.” The first 50 families to solve the crime will receive a free copy of the children’s book, “The Malted Falcon: A Chet Gecko Mystery” by Bruce Hale. Vote for the business that had the best 1920’s costumes and display at their store. Enjoy the themed movie posters custom created by BHSU graphic design students for this event. Community Art Project: Detective Notebooks

Every second Tuesday during The Big Read (Jan - March), a free community art project will take place in the art gallery. Bellman Brown Bag Series: Library Crime Spree

The January program will feature Meredith Vaselaar. She presents the Library Crime Spree project that began as a simple way to break up the monotony of the winter months. The Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas, history, literature, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Community Art Project: Secret Books

Every second Tuesday during Big Read (Jan.-March), a free community art project will take place in the art gallery. In February, we will be hollowing out old books and making secret book boxes. The Big Read Art Collective - OPENING RECEPTION

Over the last two months The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center has been working with various groups around the Spearfish community to create a large installation art exhibition. The March exhibit will include, “A Graphic Novel from the Ground Up,” a collective project that moves through the creative process of making a graphic novel. This project consisted of artists from Black Hills State University, Creekside Elementary, Spearfish High School, and within the community. The exhibit will also include, “Wall Jewelry,” created by residents at the Canyon Hills Youth Center. Finally, the completed project titled, “Treasured: A Community Collective on Value,” will be on display. This project explored themes and opinions around the idea of value and what makes an item valuable.

The Sossy Mechanics - Creativity Informance

Sossy Mechanics Creativity Informance “Going Out of Your Mind (and Back in Again): Playing with Purpose"- This community lecture will be open and free to the public. The Sossy Mechanics duo, Brian Sostek and Megan McClellan, will be presenting a short lecture to the community that introduces some of their concepts of creativity in their work as writers, choreographers, directors, performers, and producers. They will address the concepts of playing and playfulness as essential elements of creativity. They will use excerpts from their work on stage to demonstrate how these concepts are applied.

Sossy Mechanics - The Scamper Dance with Senior Theater

“The SCAMPER Dance: Playing with Movement” is a mini-workshop that gets students to apply some of the tools addressed in the Lecture/Demonstration “The Secret of Our Success: Playing with Reality.” We begin with a series of easy and funny, mental and physical warm-ups. Then, using a physical application of the tools of SCAMPER, students create unique, playful movements across the space. Finally, we show how the tools we used to create the movement can be applied to a wide range of creative endeavors including school work, problem solving and life in general.
