Lao Immigration Exhibit at Elgin Area History Museum

The Elgin Area History Museum has a long-term exhibit on display about the history of Laotian immigration to Elgin. The Laotian immigration to Elgin was a short, but intense, period in the 1970s, directly linked to the end of the Vietnam War. Elgin church groups started by sponsoring Laotians for immigration, then later federal funding helped Elgin Community College and the YWCA to provide job training, English language classes, childcare, and other forms of re-settlement into the Elgin area. Today, Elgin has one of the largest Laotian communities in Illinois, with nearly 4,000 residents.

Portrait of a Solider Exhibit

On display from September 8-18 at Gail Borden Public Library. On display from September 18-October 1 at Elgin Community College. The Portrait of a Soldier exhibit is a traveling display of hand-sketched portraits of fallen servicemembers from Illinois who have been killed since September 11, 2001 in the Global War on Terror. Artist Cameron Schilling, of Mattoon, drew the first portrait in August 2004, after Army SPC Charles Neeley, also of Mattoon, was killed in Iraq. Schilling gave the sketch to SPC Neeley's parents to convey his sympathy for their loss. In October 2005, while a student at Eastern Illinois University, Schilling decided to draw a portrait of every Illinois servicemember who has fallen during the Global War on Terror. The portraits are copies of the original, which has been given to the fallen soldiers next of kin, and the exhibit travels throughout the state of Illinois. The Things I Carried Photo Exhibit

On display from September 8-18 and on Nov. 11 at Gail Borden Public Library. On display from September 19-November 10 at Rakow Library Branch. On display on September 28 at Elgin Community College. The novel, The Things They Carried, describes not only the physical objects that soldiers carried - mundane items such as matches and m & m candies, but the intangible objects - fear, guilt, and homesickness. Local veterans were invited to bring their Vietnam War mementos, their Things I Carried, to be preserved on film. Please share their memories of this turbulent time in our Nation's history. Photographs of Vietnam veterans with “the things they carried” (items they brought with them to the war) will be on display throughout the Fox Valley. This exhibit was created by former Chicago Tribune award-winning photographer John Dziekan. Many thanks to Canon for the photo printing.
