Germantown- Children's Book Author, Ann Burg, Visits Germantown Central School

Award-winning Young Adult and children’s book author Ann Burg, will visit Germantown Central School where she will present her latest novel in verse, Serafina’s Promise, which received a Kirkus Starred Review and is a Junior Reading Guild Selection. Like the Bard Big Read selection, Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping, the book shares strong themes of family and place. Serafina is an 11-year-old girl who lives in rural Haiti and has big dreams of becoming a doctor. She faces many obstacles including abject poverty, the loss of her baby brother and the 2010 earthquake disaster. Serafina does not lose hope, however, and is determined to follow her dreams. Ms. Burg will read from her novel, and then answer questions from the audience.

Rhinecliff: Hudson River Heritage Preservation Forum

This day-long event will be taking place at Rhinecliff Hotel: Hudson River Heritage Preservation Forum on the history of the Hudson River railroad in honor of the centennial of the Rhinecliff railroad station. Meyer will speak briefly about the library and the Morton family's association with the railroad.

Red Hook: Adult Fiction Workshop

In the world of young adult fiction, where dystopia and fantasy sometimes seem to be the rule, literary fiction still has an important role to play. Novelist and playwright Madeleine George will lead adult writers in a workshop that draws on Marilynne Robinson's coming-of-age classic Housekeeping to explore image, character, and landscape in literary fiction for young adults. Please bring a notebook and pen or pencil; participants will write during the workshop. Madeleine George's two YA novels are published by Viking Children's Books. Her first, LOOKS, was one of Booklist's 2008 Top Ten First Novels for Youth, and was a 2009 ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Her second, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOU AND ME, was a Kirkus Best Teen Book of 2012, a Junior Library Guild selection and an ALA Rainbow List selection, and was chosen as Atlantic Wire's Best Complicated Romance of 2012. Red Hook - Canned! The Big Read Brings Cooking Competition to Red Hook

Watch local celebrity cheftestants battle for supremacy when Canned!, a competitive cooking program, comes to the Red Hook Firehouse at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27. Three local chefs will compete in two rounds for bragging rights, and four local residents will battle it out in a Spam-sculpting contest as part of this year’s The Big Read, a communitywide celebration of literacy. Red Hook Public Library, Red Hook Area Chamber of Commerce and Bard College are collaborating on this project, encouraging everyone to read Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. The cheftestants will have the use of pantry items, but each will receive a basket of canned goods with which to prepare their appetizer and entree. This program is free and open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring canned food, donations of dignity or monetary donations to benefit United Methodist Church Food Pantry in Red Hook. Tivoli: Teen Fiction Workshop

Educator, novelist, and poet, Carley Moore, will lead teens, grade 7 and up, in a FREE writing workshop. Do you have an idea for a young adult novel or are you just curious about the genre? Participants will use excerpts from Marilynne Robinson’s novel, Housekeeping , as a springboard into their own writing around character, landscape, and plot. Please come to the workshop with a notebook and a pen or pencil. Carley Moore’s poetry, essays, and articles have appeared in The American Poetry Review, Aufgabe, Coconut, Fence, and The Journal of Popular Culture. She is the Book Review Editor for the website Writing in Public, and her debut young adult novel, The Stalker Chronicles was published by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux in 2012. She’s a full-time faculty member in The Liberal Studies Program at New York University and an Associate of the Bard Institute for Writing and Thinking.

Robinson’s later novels are Gilead and Home. Housekeeping is a winner of the PEN/Hemingway award, and it is this year’s community “Big Read” selection. The leaders of the series will be Debbie Schnide and Kathy DeMatteo. They are retired teachers and members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills. Debbie taught art for the Kingston City Schools and Kathy taught English at Andes and Sidney.

Madonna Comix, her collaboration with visual artist Dianne Kornberg, will be published in 2014. She is the International Coordinator for Bard College’s Institute for Writing and Thinking.
