Big Read Kickoff: Edgar Allan Poe Forevermore!

We begin our six-week exploration of America's first great poet and short story writer with a two-act kickoff event. First we present one of the foremost Poe experts, John Gruesser, Ph.D., professor of English at Kean University in Union, NJ, and the president of the Poe Studies Association. Professor Gruesser's talk, "Quoth the Raven, 'Eat My Shorts': The Life, Literature and Legacy of Edgar Allan Poe," will explain the duality of Poe's immense impact. His short and sad 19th-century life inspired him to create some of the most celebrated works in American literary history, while his 21-century status as a pop culture icon keeps him alive in our hearts, even the heart of the incorrigibly flippant Bart Simpson. Act Two in our kickoff evening is "The Poe Show,” the acclaimed one-man theatrical performance by actor/writer/director Tony Tsendeas of several of Poe's most famous stories and poems. Part Shakespearean soliloquy, part spine-tingling ghost story, Tsendeas's interpretations of Poe's works are uniquely his own, and they have thrilled nationwide audiences for years.

My Poe Mysteries: Author Talk and Reading

Harold Schechter, Ph.D., a professor of American literature at Queens College in New York City, is the author of four suspense thrillers whose protagonist and crime-stopper is Poe himself. Schechter knows the psychology of crime well, as he has published historically precise accounts of 12 of the most notorious murderers in U.S. history. In this personal and compelling first keynote session, he will explain why Poe has been so tremendously influential on authors of both fiction and nonfiction, and how he lifted Poe out of his rational mind into the pages of his imaginative fiction. Along the way, he will entertain the audience with a few passages of Poe the detective "in action."

Poe Double-Feature Horror Night

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the originators of the horror genre, and his subject matter of live burial, revenge, nervous collapse, compulsion and demonic possession inspired scores of artists to create works on similarly terrifying themes. Each double feature will be introduced by Professor Edward Shannon of Ramapo College. Tonight's Double Feature 1: "The Fall of the House of Usher" dramatic reading, followed by a screening of a 2012 suspenseful ghost story starring Daniel Radcliffe, "The Woman in Black."

Wyckoff Reformed Church and Graveyard Tour, With a Twist

Founded in 1806, three years before Poe's birth, the Wyckoff Reformed Church is an amazing historical landmark that is remarkable to tour. Many Civil War veterans lay buried in its graveyard, and the church's early history mirrors the country's in so many intriguing ways. Those fortunate enough to attend this tour led by the Wyckoff Historical Society will get a lesson in local and national history, and something more: Walking amongst them and reading from his works so eerily suited to these surroundings will be the man they call The Raven himself!

Friends of the Wyckoff Library Book Discussion Group

Adult Services Librarian Marilyn Force will lead the library's adult reading group through a comparison of "The Beautiful Cigar Girl," by Daniel Stashower, with "The Mystery of Marie Roget." "Cigar Girl" is the nonfictional account of Mary Rogers, whose brutal murder inspired Poe to write a fictionalized version, changing only the victim's name and moving the crime's location from Hoboken, NJ, to Paris, France.

Professor Gruesser will sketch the parallels between fact and fiction in this story, with accompanying slides of his own journey of discovery to Florence in search of his mummy.

Edgar Allan Poe's New York

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston and lived in many cities along the East Coast, but New York is where he lived the longest as an adult, and it was the last place he lived before his death in 1849. Attorney, journalist and licensed tour guide Benjamin Waldman will take the audience on a walking tour from the comfort of their chairs to all the places Poe called home in New York City, including the famous Poe Cottage in the Bronx. Through the use of slides, video and delightful anecdotes, Waldman will take us back in time and explain how the city as it was in the mid 19th century influenced Poe's life and work.
