The Big Read will officially begin in Whitefish with a reception at Whitefish Community Library. Activities include a "Banned Books" display, a "ribbon cutting" ceremony free releasing copies of "Fahrenheit 451" to the public, an official announcement of The Big Read by Whitefish mayor, and refreshments.

Members of the Whitefish Fire Department will visit during the children's story time to talk about fire prevention. The fire chief will read a story that deals with fire safety.

Tour the Whitefish Emergency Center, enjoy artwork created by Whitefish elementary students, and celebrate the value of our local fire department as they keep our community safe. A celebration with balloon, hotdogs, dunk tanks and live music at the Whitefish Emergency Center. Free copies of Fahrenheit 451 will be distributed along with other Big Read materials.

Author Clem Work, University of Montana professor and author, will host the showing of the documentary "Jailed for Their Words: When Free Speech Died in Wartime America." Discussion follows.

Clem Work from University of Montana will discuss his book, "Darkest before Dawn: Sedition and Free Speech in the American West" which focuses on Montana's 1918 sedition law that shut down freedom of speech. This assault on civil rights is mirrored in the events described in "Fahrenheit 451."
