Kick-off & Keynote Session

The UrbanPromise community, Big Read partners, and Camden city and Pennsauken Township residents will gather on October 6 at UrbanPromise to kick-off the area's Big Read programming. Events for the month will be outlined in more detail and audience members will be encouraged to read along with UrbanPromise and partners. Guest speaker Chuck Weiss will compare his exploits as a sled dog racer to plot lines in The Call of the Wild and will be accompanied by live sled dogs. A panel that includes a college professor, an expeditionary learning expert, and UrbanPromise teacher and student will engage in discussions around the life of Jack London, book themes, "survival of the fittest," and how the book can relate to the lives of those living in Pennsauken and Camden. The goal of the event will be to build enthusiasm for our The Big Read initiative and promises to be an exciting and engaging day.

Youth Essay Contest Begins

Youth ages 12-18 reading and studying The Call of the Wild will be encouraged to write a short essay comparing themes of the book--such as "survival" and "struggle"--to their own experiences. Students in 8th and 9th grade at UrbanPromise's schools will participate in essay writing in class. Principals and other UrbanPromise administrators and Big Read partners will judge the contest at the end of the month. The contest rules will be announced at the Kick-off/Keynote Session.

Lunchtime Film Viewing

UrbanPromise 8th and 9th grade students will gather at the UrbanPromise Academy high school to view a version of The Call of the Wild and discuss similarities and differences between the book and film, cinematography, character portrayals, etc. Academy English teacher Michael Lovaglio will host the viewing and lead discussions. This event is open to the public. Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

A Rutgers-Camden University professor will lead a book discussion on themes of The Call of the Wild, the life of Jack London, history surrounding the book, and/or its social and political context. Dr. Cortney Bolden, science teacher at Camden's UrbanPromise Academy, will lead book discussions with a group of teenage girls who reside in the city. Female residents are encouraged to join the group in reading and discussing the novel.
