Come Join us for our BIG READ kick-off event, the 2012 24 hour Read-A-Thon! This year we are pleased to announce that the University of Bridgeport will be reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury continuously for 24-hours to promote literacy programs throughout Fairfield County. University President Neil Salonen will give greetings and be our first reader at 12noon on Monday, Oct. 22. We will have plenty of free food and refreshments around the clock. P.T. Barnum is best known for his circus career but this lecture, presented by Kathy Maher, Executive Director/Curator of the Barnum Museum, will focus on Barnum's impact on American social and political reform. His 1832 newspaper, The Herald of Freedom, was published as a tool to advance freedom of speech and promote the voice of a newly formed democratic society. Collaborative endeavors, inspired by ongoing research on the culture and oral traditions of the African Diaspora, produced and published two artists books featuring Cuban and U.S.A. artists/printmakers and writers.

In 1831, a 21-year-old P.T. Barnum started his own newspaper, The Herald of Freedom, buy soon found himself jailed for libel. In typical Barnum style, his release was marked with a grand parade. Rare examples of The Herald of Freedom will be displayed along with other documents and objects relating to Barnum's lesser known careers. Featured artists Imna Arroyo and Ramon Vargas Artiz, who collaborated on this limited edition artists' books Eleggua and La Sagrada Familia/The Sacred Family, will discuss the process of collaboration and their linoleum cut prints that celebrate the storytelling traditions of Africa. This artwork reflects the scholarship devoted to recovering the rich visual language of African (Beninese) and Afro-Caribbean Yoruba mythology and folklore.
