Vietnam War Rewind Movie Series: "Forrest Gump"

The Vietnam War has been the subject of many feature films. From "The Deer Hunter" to Forrest Gump, the Vietnam cycle of films America has been producing since the 1970s has had an impact on audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Whether they are cinematic representations of the war itself or films that deal more with issues veterans face at home after returning from the war, these movies have depicted our American experience; and were ways that we as a society have attempted to come to terms with the experiences of the Vietnam era. The Big Read 2012 will include a feature film series dedicated to films inspired by the Vietnam War. Feature films will be presented on Monday afternoons and evenings to better accomodate retired and working individuals as well as students. The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane for amazon.com

Revisiting the Vietnam War Lecture Series: The Roots of American Involvement in Vietnam – from World War II to 1964

Big Read participants will have a chance to learn more about the Vietnam War era during the "Revisiting the Vietnam War Lecture Series" on four consecutive Tuesday nights at the Quincy Public Library. The lectures are designed to encompass a diverse rance of topics: from the beginnings of the Vietnam Conflict and its aftermath to a lecture on Protest Songs from the period. David Costigan, PhD, Professor Emeritus of History, Quincy University, will outline the beginnings behind the Vietnam Conflict. In this period every President had a policy for Indo-China, of which Vietnam was a part. Dr. Costigan will outline policies adopted by Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy that involved the United States ever more deeply in Vietnam. For each President, Vietnam was a back-burner issue, a part of a bigger entity, the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and other grave concerns over the direction China was taking. This presentation sets the stage for the most intense years of the Vietnam War, 1964-1974, presented by Dr. Justin Coffey. The ink on the agreement that ended World War II barely had time to dry before another war began, this time in a remote corner of the Earth that most Americans barely knew anything about -- the peninsula in Southeast Asia called Indo- China. But by the time the fighting ended thirty years later, there was hardly an American without a very strong opinion one way or another on the Vietnam War, which cost nearly 50,000 American lives and created deep divides in this country that have yet to heal. This lecture investigates French involvement in the nation, from the early days of the war against Ho Chi Minh, to the crucial battle of Dienbienphu and the loss of French Empire. Join Dr. David Costigan, Professor Emeritus of History at Quincy Unversity as he explores beginnings of Vietnam as a French colony to its drive to become its own country, and the results when the United States decides to participate in "nation building."

Documentary and Discussion: "Why We Fight"

Several documentaries depicting the Vietnam War and its impact will be presented on Sunday afternoons with discussion to follow. Discussion leaders include a Vietnam War veteran, a member of the local Historical Society and several history professors from Quincy University. Jeff Seabarkrob, former Marine, a decorated Viet Nam war veteran with training as a faciliattor for various management training programs for UTC and The Hartford Graduate Center, will lead the discussion after the documentary presentation. Winner of the 2005 Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Eugene Jarecki's groundbreaking documentary dissects the political, economic and historic reasons behind our increasingly aggressive military strategy since the end of World War II. The film opens with President Eisenhower's 1961 farewell speech, in which he warned Americans of the growing power of the "military industrial complex." Expanding upon Eisenhower's warning, Jarecki relies on interviews with American soldiers, government officials, military insiders, defense industry personnel, congressman, scholars, ordinary Iraqis, and others to provide analysis of the last 50 years of U.S. military expansion, wars and interventions.

Revisiting the Vietnam War Lecture Series-- Vietnam: 1964-1975

Between 1964-1975, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford tried to find a way to end the war in Vietnam without sacrificing American honor. Dr. Justin Coffey, Quincy University Associate Professor of History, will discuss how each of these presidents shaped and followed public opinion on the conflict in Vietnam. The talk will begin in 1964, when Congress authorized the president to use all necessary force to defend American interests in Southeast Asia, and conclude with the fall of Saigon in April 1975. The Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies, known as the Viet Cong, against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. The war began in 1954 (though conflict in the region stretched back to the mid-1940s), after the rise to power of Ho Chi Minh and his communist Viet Minh party in North Vietnam, and continued against the backdrop of an intense Cold War between two global superpowers: the United States and the Soviet Union. More than 3 million people (including 58,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam War; more than half were Vietnamese civilians. By 1969, at the peak of U.S. involvement in the war, more than 500,000 U.S. military personnel were involved in the Vietnam conflict. Growing opposition to the war in the United States led to bitter divisions among Americans, both before and after President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1973. In 1975, communist forces seized control of Saigon, ending the Vietnam War, and the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year. Join Dr. Justin Coffey as he takes us on the long, brutal journey of the Vietnam War from its beginning to its conclusion.

Documentary and Discussion: "The Fog of War"

"The Fog of War," the movie that finally won Errol Morris the best documentary Oscar, is a spellbinder. Morris interviews Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and finds a uniquely unsettling viewpoint on much of 20th-century American history. Employing a ton of archival material, including LBJ's fascinating taped conversations from the Oval Office, Morris probes the reasons behind the U.S. commitment to the Vietnam War--and finds a depressingly inconsistent policy. McNamara himself emerges as--well, not exactly apologetic, but clearly haunted by the what-ifs of Vietnam. He also mulls the bombing of Japan in World War II and the Cuban Missile Crisis, raising more questions than he answers. The Fog of War has the usual inexorable Morris momentum, aided by an uneasy Philip Glass score. This movie provides a glimpse inside government. It also encourages skepticism about same. Dr. Megan Boccardi, Quincy University Assistant Professor of History, will lead a discussion after the film.

Vietnam War Rewind Movie Series: "Platoon"

Winner* of 4 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, and based on the first-hand experience of Oscar®-winning director Oliver Stone, Platoon is powerful, intense and starkly brutal. "Harrowingly realistic and completely convincing" (Leonard Maltin), it is "a dark, unforgettable memorial" (The Washington Post) to every soldier whose innocence was lost in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam. Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young, naive American who, upon his arrival in Vietnam, quickly discovers that he must do battle not only with the Viet Cong, but also with the gnawing fear, physical exhaustion and intense anger growing within him. While his two commanding officers (Oscar®-nominated Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) draw a fine line between the war they wage against the enemy and the one they fight with each other, the conflict, chaos and hatred permeate Taylor, suffocating his realities and numbing his feelings to man's highest value life.

Documentary and Discussion: "My Vietnam, Your Iraq"

The Vietnam War polarized the United States in the 1960s; decades later, U.S. involvement in Iraq initiated its own discord. But My Vietnam Your Iraq connects these two wars with less attention paid to divisive politics, choosing instead to focus on the personal stories of eight Vietnam veterans whose own children have served in Iraq. The stories examine the pride, fear, and myriad of emotions and challenges that parents and their children face during deployment, each with their own perspective and expectation. Though the stories are unique to the individual families, these intimate profiles resonate with all of us: the stories of the men and women who fought and fight for themselves, their families, and their country. Bridget Quinlivan, English/Writing Specialist at John Wood Community College and Research/Office Assistant Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County will lead the discussion following the movie presentation.

Vietnam War Rewind Movie Series: "Born on the Fourth of July"

The second film in Oliver Stone's Vietnam trilogy moves from the brutality of war in "Platoon" to its equally traumatic aftermath. Based on the memoir of combat veteran Ron Kovic, the film stars Tom Cruise as Kovic, whose gunshot wound in Vietnam left him paralyzed from the chest down. He is deeply embittered by neglect in a veteran's hospital and by the shattering of his patriotic idealism because of the horror and futility of the Vietnam conflict. While painfully and awkwardly adjusting to his disability and a changing definition of masculinity, Kovic joins the burgeoning movement of antiwar protest, culminating in a climactic appearance at the 1976 Democratic national convention. A powerfully intimate portrait that unfolds on an epic scale, "Born on the Fourth of July" is arguably Stone's best film (if you can forgive its often strident tone), and Cruise's Oscar-nominated role is uncompromising in its depiction of one man's personal anguish and political awakening. --Jeff Shannon for amazon.com
