Edgar Allan Poe-stal: An International Mail Art Competition

• Submissions must be inspired by the life, themes or work of Edgar Allan Poe and artist must state how/why. • Entries must be postmarked no later than Oct. 10, 2012 • Mail to: Edgar Allan Poe-stal * P.O. Ready. Set. Poe!

For three days -- Friday, Saturday and Sunday -- September 28, 29 and 30 to kick off The Big Read in Yuba-Sutter, volunteers will stage pop-up readings from the short stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Locations throughout Yuba and Sutter Counties will be included. If you would like to be a reader, you can sign up and get your official limited-edition Ready. Set. Poe! Reader button at the Yuba County and Sutter County libraries and at the Arts Council office.

Gallery show featuring works by local artists that were inspired by Edgar Allan Poe -- his life, his themes, his poems or short stories. Open to the public at no charge, Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 4 pm. All local artists are invited to submit their work and a brief description of which of Poe's work(s)influenced their creation. Mary Aaron - The Big Reader

Mary Musgrove Bobo Aaron (1875-1935) was a member of a prominent pioneer family in the Gold Rush town of Marysville. Many personal volumes from this avid reader's library are on display in her home, which is now the Mary Aaron Museum. During The Big Read period, the Friday and Saturday public tours of the home will pause when they reach Mary's reading nook, at which point docents will read a poem or other passage from Edgar Allan Poe, whose work can be found among Mary Aaron's collection. The tours are open to the public at no charge.

"The Lighter Side of Poe" at the Young People's Theatre Program

During October, students of the Young People's Theatre Program will be studying Edgar Allan Poe, as part of The Big Read, in partnership with the Yuba Sutter Regional Arts Council. Students will receive a book of Poe's poems and over the course of three Saturday will work on a group performance of his most famous poem, "The Raven," to be presented on the final Saturday, October 27. The class will be instructed by Magic Theatre writer and director John Elliott, a Poe fan since childhood. Tuition is $5 per class or $20 for the month. Saluting Sergeant Major Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe, although a West Point dropout, served with distinction after enlisting in the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant Major. Like many of today's veterans, he had periods in his life when he suffered from hunger, homelessness, joblessness, poverty and depression. During its canned food and clothing drive for Vets in need, the Yuba Sutter Volunteers will help stage readings from Poe's work throughout the day and welcome Poe himself around lunchtime. Those bringing donations (personal care items and blankets also are welcome), are invited to come to the Poe table, pick up information about The Big Read, listen to some Poe-try and accept a book of Poe's work, while supplies last, as a thank-you for their generosity.

Masterpieces of the Imaginative Mind: Edgar Allan Poe

Lead by Don Kindell of Yuba City, this 8-week educational video series focuses on literature's most fantastic works. This particular viewing will highlight Edgar Allan Poe. Attendees will learn about the works and times of Edgar Allan Poe and Jules Verne, an author highly-influenced by Poe, through three 30-minute videos. Event begins with a reading of Poe and ends with a discussion of his work. First 25 participants will receive a copy of Poe's poetry book.

Edgar Meets Dinah on D Street in Scarysville

Edgar Allan Poe will be holding court on Halloween (or what he sometimes refers to as "amateur hour") in downtown Marysville which once again will be transformed into Scarysville. He'll be stationed at The Big Read exhibit in front of Dinah's on D Street Book Store from 5 pm to 8 pm. Dinah's will be offering treats; Poe will be reading from his gloomier works.

An Evening with Selden Edwards and Edgar Allan Poe

New York Times best-selling author Selden Edwards ("The Little Book" and "The Lost Prince"), read and taught Poe during his decades as a literature educator. A native of Marysville, he'll be returning to his hometown to read from some of his favorite Poe works, discuss his own novels and Poe's influence on him. Poe was the first writer to introduce the concept of physical time travel, a concept that is pivotal to Edwards' bestseller "The Little Book." Following the reading and discussion, there will be a book signing, with copies of his new novel, "The Lost Prince," available, and the closing reception for The Big Read Yuba-Sutter.
