Our Town Family Festival - Kick-Off Event

Huge all day outdoor event with family fun games and events in a late 1930's small town theme culminating with a live performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The Big Read information tent regarding Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" will be manned and presented as an event in its self with barkers gathering crowds to give away book marks, Big Read event flyers, books, instructions for how to get Reader's Guides, and Teacher's Guides online. Food tents, arts and crafts, live music, and all kinds of games. Burbank and Los Angeles Mayors will be invited along with city, county, and state officials and council members. The event includes the Afro-Peruvian music/dance of Crodova Creative Dance Theatre, a Peruvian costume contest, coloring books, 1930's dance lessons, along with readings and discussions of Thornton Wilder's "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" and "Our Town." Aerial acts and and performing acrobats with shows will also be happening all day. A great family experience to kick off our grant season.

Stories of Thornton Wilder at the Junior Blind of America

Program includes: introduction of "The Big Read", Shakespeare At Play actors perform readings of selections from "The Bridge of Luis Rey" and "Our Town." Costuming from the time period is shown and samples of the music of the 1930's is played. Q&A period at the end of the program.

Thornton Wilder Meets School on Wheels.

School on Wheels is a tutoring program aimed at serving the underserved youth in Los Angeles CA. Shakespeare At Play will meet with the tutors, students and parents to introduce the Big Read, provide free book marks, information on the other available guides, and donate books to the organization to distribute to the appropriate students both on a permanent basis and on loan so that more students and families will be able to benefit from the goals of The Big Read and the exposure to this great story. The Benefits are ongoing beyond the event date.

Our Town at the Petersen Automotive Museum

Exhibits of 1930's automobiles along with related items from the time period (ie. gas pumps, automotive tools, tanks, tires.etc.) Shakespeare At Play actors dressed in 1930's costumes mingle with the crowd distributing Big Read bookmarks and engaging in conversations regarding the Big Read and Thornton Wilder's books "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" and "Our Town." A main table is set up and manned by costumed actors handing out copies of "Our Town" along with bookmarks and instructions on how to get Reader's Guides on line.

Brown Bag Book Club Reads "Our Town."

Participants will enjoy an afternoon of literary discussion and the tastings of the Chef’s competition.

Members of Shakespeare At Play will introduce The Big Read and its goals along with providing free bookmarks, information on the acquisition of reader’s guides, and free copies of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town.” An appropriately designed historical overview of the time of the piece and the reasons for its composition will be discussed prompting the participants to have a good basis of understanding to read the book. Selected brief segments of the book will be performed. Small group discussions or large group depending on the number or participants, will be organized to discuss their memories of the time represented by the story. All participants will be encouraged to read the book to the younger members of their families as well.

It's a Wrap Thornton Wilder

People are encouraged to wear costumes and clothing from the 1930’s, Live Jazz Band with Singer performances, Ongoing food and drink, (first light hors d'oeuvres, then pause and smorgasbord of Peruvian delicacies), Light drinks, water, wine, soft drinks, juices. Local and Federal Officials will be present to demonstrate their support of the Big Read. Re-enactment magicians & sleight of hands persons interacting with the crowd. Intro The Big Read, its purpose and programs. Big Read displays, with examples of previous events. Cast to be determined, Professional reading of segments of the Play "Our Town" and a performance of selections from “The Bridge of San Luis Rey.” The final presentation will be that of L.A. Hosts Lions Club Leo's Round Table discussion of the book which they have been studying for months. BIG READ giveaways of bookmarks, information about the readers guides, and audio CDs.
