An introduction to the Big Read will be made as well as to Edgar Allen Poe his life and his works. a concert of original music will be performed by the composer Kristen Lawrence who has written and recorded several CDs of Poe and Halloween music. Her main piece is "The Raven" which is a beautiful piece who's text is taken directly from Poe's writing of the same name. A meet and greet as well as a signing will take place at the end of the performance.

An introduction of The Big Read will be made to the audience and the explanation of it's purpose will be made to the public before they see an appropriate film of an Edgar Allan Poe story. The film to be viewed is "The fall of the House of Usher." A film and book discussion will take place after the viewing and discussion groups will be established to address the correlations between the film and the Poe story represented.

This event is scheduled on the day of our author's death. The atmosphere of this place of business is perfect for our event as we will be holding a mock "seance" to re-connect with Mr. Poe and inquire as to the motivations of his writings. There will be professional readings of some of his works and a discussion of their impact and significance. Big Read Give-aways of book marks etc. will take place. A grand time will be had by one and all!!!

Advertisements and banners of the Big Read will be posted all around the location. A scary Haunted House course will be build consisting of rooms made in the theme of one of Poe's stories. There will be a Raven room, a Pit and the Pendulum room etc. Readings will take place in various locations with audience participation. Book marks and books will be distributed.

Advertising and explanations of the Big Read will be given throughout the afternoon as the following takes place. All through the beautiful vastness of the Huntington Gardens small groups of professional actors will perform staged readings of some of Poe's finest works. The people then move from one story to another as they walk around the gardens. The encouragement of the audience to read them for themselves is always a strong aspect of these performances and are aided by the book discussion groups created and implemented.

The Big Read and all it stands for is introduced. Then, actor Duffy Hudson performs a one man show as Edgar Allan Poe portraying Mr. Poe and demonstrating his times, life, and inspirations for his writings. Discussions, give-a-ways, and personal readings take place as well as book discussion groups will be formed and implemented.

The Big Read is introduced. The entire outdoor space at the location is converted to a Halloween carnival with music, readings, games, food, face-painting, pony rides, arts and crafts, etc. Children act out scary creatures to original music by Kristen Lawrence and join small group poem readings where book discussion groups are made and implemented. Art contests and others will be engaged and focused on reading to encourage greater reading participation.
