Poe's Detective Stories

Edgar Allen Poe is most famous for his gothic stories of horror and the macabre--most of today's horror writers acknowledge him as the father of the genre. But Poe is also the creator of another popular genre of fiction--the detective story. Forty years before Arthur Conan Doyle dreamed of Sherlock Holmes, Poe's detectives were using logic to solve murders, thefts, and other crimes. We'll discuss two of Poe's stories from Tales of terror and detection: The Mystery of Marie Rogêt and The Purloined Letter and get to know the world's first super detective, C. Auguste Dupin. Book discussion will be led by Scott Coykendall.

Lizzie Borden Took an Axe... Or Did She?

Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of the first murder mystery stories ever published, sixty years before Lizzie Borden's case electrified the nation. In 1892 Lizzie Borden, a 32 year old single woman, was officially charged with the murder of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. The events that followed the murder would stir the curiosity of people across the nation. After four official criminal proceedings, Lizzie Borden was acquitted of the murder. The case is a mystery that has inspired documentaries, television movies, plays, musicals, poems, a scholarly journal, and law school case studies. This presentation is designed to review the facts and explore evidence that some suggest point to Lizzie’s guilt and others say exonerate her.
