Kick-Off with 'Bradbury Chronicles' Author

Sam Weller, authorized biographer for Ray Bradbury, brings rich insight and personal stories about the author to our Big Read Kick-Off event for 2014. Weller is himself a respected author, a frequent lecturer, and teaches at Columbia College in Chicago. Weller's three books on Bradbury will be available for purchase.

Fahrenheit 451: Collage Workshop

In this workshop, led by Mill Street Loft Artist Christine Livesey, teens will create a mixed media collage based on imagery from the classic book Fahrenheit 451. The group will read passages form the book and look at the illustrations of artist Eric Carle and use his unique collage style as inspiration. Students will choose a theme or character from Fahrenheit 451 and create an original illustration.

Examining Truffaut's Adaptation

Big Read Night on the Town

What could be better than dinner and a movie?! Local restaurants in downtown Poughkeepsie offer Big Read Specials from 5 to 6:30 pm. Then the Bardavon offers a pre-show concert on the mighty Wurlitzer Organ, starting at 7 pm. At 7:30 pm, the Baradvon screens the 1966 Francois Truffaut film based on Bradbury's book, Fahrenheit 451.

The Art of Printing in Renaissance Germany

Explore the artistic vitality of the cities of Augsburg and Nuremberg, which were the centers of innovation in book and print production during the Renaissance. Patricia Phagan, Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Art Center, and Ronald D. Patkus, Head of Special Collections for the Vassar College Libraries, lead a guided tour of rare masterpieces form the 1470s through the 1540s on view this fall at Vassar.
