Coastal GA Reads The Great Gatsby Kick Off: First Friday with Flappers and Philosophers

Coastal Georgia Reads "The Great Gatsby" kicks off during First Friday in downtown Brunswick with proclamations by elected officials, high school jazz bands, vintage cars on display and other surprises. Attendees are encouraged to dress in period clothes and follow a "Time Line of the 1920s" highlighting the historic moments in American culture, sports and politics. Along the way, they can pick up fact-filled "trading cards" representing each year of the decade. Copies of the novel and Big Read materials will be available at all participating locations.

Gangsters and Jazz Film Series: "The Roaring Twenties"

This movie is hailed as a classic in the gangster movie genre and the last film that James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart made together. Cagney's good/bad guy character, Eddie Bartlett, was in fact based on Larry Fay, a cab driver turned bootlegger. Fay is also believed to have been one of the inspirations for F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby." ( 1939, 104 min B&W Not rated)

Penn State University English professor, James L. W. West III, talks about the creation of "The Great Gatsby." Prof. West is the editor of "TRIMALCHIO, An Early Version of the Great Gatsby," which is a reconstruction of Fitzgerald's first attempt at writing the novel and the version that was eventually corrected and rewritten when the novel was in galleys.
