Barb City Bus Tour

One of the events planned for DKPL's 2013 Big Read is a special bus tour of DeKalb emphasizing people, places, and things relating to the library's 1926 benefactor - Jacob Haish. There will be stops at some locations, and simple drive-bys at others. The tour leader is Local Historian Steve Bigolin. A highlight of the day is a planned stop at the DeKalb Masonic Temple, to view the early 20th Century portrait of Haish, which they have. Also scheduled to be visited is his gravestie in Fairview Cemetery, and the Ellwood House Visitor Center (where Haish memorabilia is displayed). The sites of the Haish mansion, barbed wire factory, and Haish School will also be pointed out. Haish was an active lumber dealer and contractor for 20 years prior to barbed wire days, and a few houses he designed are to be seen. The role Haish played in the early history of NIU is also to be spotlighted on the tour. A Trans Vac, handicapped accessible, bus leaves from the North 3rd Street side of the library. Seating is limited, so reserve your seat by registering online or by calling Edith at 815-756-9568 ext. 260. Thank you VAC for generously donating the bus for this tour and for Steve Bigolin for donating his time and efforts! This event is free and open to all. Elia Peetie: The Three Johns

On Thursday, October 10, at 7:00 p.m., The Big Read of DeKalb County 2013 presents The Three Johns, written by Elia W. Peattie and performed by professional actress Michèle LaRue. The Three Johns is one of many October presentations complementing DeKalb County’s Seventh Big Read: "True Grit", a novel of the Old West by Charles Portis. The Three Johns returns us to the settling of the Nebraska Territory, where a spirited new widow and her three neighbors—each named John—brave storms and stampedes to forge a community and create new lives. Author Peattie wrote her best work during her own Nebraska years (1888 – 1896). Over a forty-year writing career, hundreds of her profiles, reviews, and short stories were published in prominent magazines and featured regularly in the Chicago Tribune and the Omaha World-Herald. A Chicagoland native, Michèle LaRue makes her home in the New York City suburbs. She tours nationally with a unique repertoire of century-old American TALES WELL TOLD that bring to life the world of our ancestors. “What you have to offer is priceless.” “It's difficult to find the words to describe the wonder of what you do!” “You could hear a pin drop!” enthused audiences in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Kentucky. Michèle has specialized in performances of American literature from this period for 25 years. Her more than 300 past sponsors include the Smithsonian, the Newberry Library, and the Missouri History Museum. She is a member of both major actors’ unions—Actors’ Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA—and, as writer-editor, of Drama Desk, an organization of New York-area theatre journalists.
