Celebrate International Literacy Day by playing games from the 1930’s the timeframe of our Big Read title for this year's community-wide read. Hopscotch, Tiddlywinks, Monopoly, Scrabble, Wahoo, Marbles, Sorry, Go Fish, Duck, Duck Goose and more. Event will be held at The Literacy Center. Games for all ages! The Book Hungry Sock Monkeys, our middle school book group, will discuss "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis and similar titles relating to To Kill a Mockingbird. The Stewards of Children Training, sponsored by the Attleboro Y and New Hope, is a prevention and response program developed by Darkness to Light, an international non-profit organization that seeks to protect children from sexual abuse by placing responsibility squarely on adult shoulders. Stewards of Children educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. This two and a half hour workshop combines a mix of survivor stories, expert advice and practical guidance for preventing child sexual abuse. Participants will learn about choice, personal power, relentless compassion, and about becoming conscious in a new way. The Attleboro Area Bar Association is sponsoring the showing of the film "To Kill A Mockingbird" at the Attleboro District Court. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in the Depression-era South, defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge, and his kids against prejudice. The atmosphere of the courtroom to view the film, followed by discussion by AABA members will enhance the reader's understanding of the many messages in this year's community wide reading of "To Kill a Mockingbird". Mary McDonagh Murphy is an independent documentary director & writer whose work has appeared on PBS. For 20 years she was a producer @ CBS News, where she won six Emmy Awards. She has written for Newsweek, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Post, and Publishers Weekly. A native of Rhode Island, she is a graduate of Wesleyan University and was a John S. Knight Fellow @ Stanford University. Mary is the author of “Scout, Atticus, & Boo” which celebrates 50 years of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and has produced the film “Hey Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill A Mockingbird” which was released in 2012. Set in the 1930’s Jim Crow south, Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird takes on the issues of class and race in a small southern town. It was during this era that Black musicians created a new musical form to accommodate and resist the social and legal restrictions of Jim Crow—including those encountered by Lee’s fictional character Tom Robinson. This music is called The Blues. Featuring poet J.C. Reddick, III; Prof. Rob “Stovetop” Lawson, author of "Jim Crow’s Counterculture: The Blues and Black Southerners, 1890—1945", and local legendary Blues artist Shor’ty Billups and the Foxxx Band. Shor’ty Billups is the former drummer for Soul Man Wilson Pickett and session drummer for Etta James. He has performed at Scullers Jazz Club and many international venues. Cost: $10 per person. CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION Darkness to Light "Stewards of Children" Training. As part of our efforts to nurture and protect every child in our community, the Y along with New Hope will train participants in Darkness to Light, a national program designed to educate adults about the steps they can take to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to the reality of child sexual abuse. Now we're extending that training to adults throughout the community. Through the Darkness to Light program, you'll be trained as "Steward of Children" to help us protect the children of Attleboro, Norton, and surrounding communities, with a goal of training 5% of the adult population in the area.
