African-American West: Black Cowboys and Buffalo Soldiers

It's not likely that you’ll see them in Hollywood’s old Western movies or read about them in U.S. history books. They are the black cowboys of the late 1800s. From Bill Picket to Cathay Williams, black cowboys and Buffalo Soldiers performed in rodeos, helped settle the West, and kept the peace with the Indigenous people. In this after-school workshop, doll-maker Debra Britt, curator of the National Black Doll Museum, Mansfield, MA, will share the largely forgotten history of Black Cowboys and Buffalo Soldiers, while leading students in making a doll depicting a Buffalo Solider using recycled materials. The doll is an adaptation of the African Wrap doll, a traditional art form rooted in African-American culture. The event is co-hosted by Coelho Middle School and The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Committee of Greater Attleboro. Space is limited. Registration is required. Please contact Ethel Garvin at ethel.garvin@gmail.com. Grade: K-12
